What is Parkinson’s Disease? Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive condition that occurs when certain nerve cells (neurons) in the brain become damaged or die. These neurons are responsible for producing dopamine , a chemical that helps control movement and coordination. As dopamine levels decrease, the brain struggles to control movement and emotions effectively, leading to the characteristic signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s. What Causes Parkinson’s Disease? The exact cause of Parkinson’s is not fully known, but several factors may contribute: Genetic factors : Mutations in specific genes can increase the risk of Parkinson’s in some families. Environmental triggers : Long-term exposure to toxins such as pesticides or herbicides may increase risk.
